\nThe much-awaited and prestigious SAKHA
\nAWARDS which are bestowed on individuals from different walks of life for
\ncontribution of national importance, were given away on 6th May
\n2012 at New Delhi by PECOBA (Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh Old
\nBoys Association, New Delhi)<\/i> in association with SAKHA Cultural
\nSociety, New Delhi. At the glittering function organized by the two institutions
\nat Mavlankar Hall, Shri Amarjit Singh Kohli, Founder General Secretary, PECOBA
\nand Founder Chairman, SAKHA, announced the six personalities chosen for the
\nnational SAKHA AWARDS 2012, while stating that \u2018the PECOBA and SAKHA are
\ncelebrating historic moment of the 100 years of Indian Cinema in a big way by
\ngiving recognition to film artists, critics, writers, journalists, editors etc
\nwho have done extraordinary contribution in the field.<\/div>\n

\nThe Sakha Awardees this year included 78 years
\nold Veteran Film Music Historian Nalin Shah <\/b>of Mumbai, noted
\nfilm writer Har Mandir Singh Hamraaz of Kanpur<\/b> (Compiler of
\nHindi Film Geetkosh containing details of over 43,000 Hindi Film Songs from
\n5661 Hindi Films from 1931 to 1980), RP Sinha, IAS Retd<\/b> (Musicologist,
\ncreative writer- declared as the most versatile person), VSK Sood<\/b>,
\nPresident Sangam Kala Group, which organizes world\u2019s biggest singing
\ncompetition every year, the duo brothers Satish Popli and Jaswant Popli of
\nfamous Doremi Orchestra who have now assumed the role of grooming young singers,
\nand Shri Kumar Vikram, <\/b>Editor, <\/b>National Book
\nTrust, India for his individual contribution for the documentation of
\nthe Rights Catalogue of Books on Indian Cinema (Point of View) <\/i><\/b>published
\nby National Book Trust, India to promote translations of books on Indian
\ncinema and for bringing together the book culture and mass media culture. Sakha
\nAwards were instituted in 1987 and some of its past winners in the film
\ncategory are producers BR Chopra, Ravi Chopra, music Directors Anil Biswas,
\nRavinder Jain, Jaidev, Anu Malik, Ravi, Raj Kamal, playback singers Kumar Sanu,
\nSapna Mukerji, Abhijit, Penaz Masani, Mohinder Kapoor, Usha Timothy.<\/div>\n

Satish Jaswant Popli Duo brothers of Doremi Orchestra receiving Sakha Award from

\nSpeaking on the occasion, Ms. Uma Vasudev, the
\neminent litterateur who gave away the awards, lauded the efforts of PECOBA and SAKHA
\nfor giving recognition to the veterans like Nalin Shah and other young awardees
\non the same platform. Ms. Aruna Vasudev veteran Film Journalist and Founder,
\nAsian Film Festival, who was the special speaker on the occasion, outlined the
\nhistory of Indian Cinema and how awards give encouragement to those who serve
\nthe world of cinema through creative and other writings.<\/div>\n

\nVeteran Film Music Historian Nalin Shah gave a very
\ninteresting and absorbing account through a Lecdem (Lecture cum demonstration
\nof old film scenes)of the hundred years history of Indian Films from the beginning
\nof first silent movie \u201cRaja Harishchandra\u201d which was released on 3rd
\nMay, 2012 till today when the song \u201cChikni Chameli\u201d from film \u201cAgnipath\u201d is
\ngenerating waves.<\/div>\n

Padmashree Vikramjit Singh Sahney<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
\nChief Guest Padmashree Vikramjit Singh Sahney, founder President
\nof World Punjabi Organisation spoke in detail about the role and contribution
\nof Punjabis in the realm of Indian Cinema as actors, directors, music
\ndirectors, lyricsts etc starting from the launch of First Talkie Movie \u201cAlam
\nAara\u201d in 1931 in which Prithviraj Kapoor had acted through the first singing
\nsuperstar of India legendary Kundan Lal Saigal, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand,
\nDharmendra, lyricists Kedar Sharma, Sahir Ludhianvi, music directors Husan Lal
\nBhagat Ram, OP Nayyar, directors BR Chopra, Yash Chopra.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOthers who spoke at the Function included 97 year old Vidyanath
\nSeth, the renowned radio singer of yesteryears, 
\nNirmala Hussan Lal, wife of late music director Husan Lal of Husan Lal
\nBhagat Ram fame, Praminder Chopra, grandson of legendary first singing
\nsuperstar of Indian Films Kundan Lal Saigal, Shikha Vohra Biswas daughter of
\nlate music director Anil Biswas and Dinesh Shailendra son of lyricist
\nShailendra. <\/div>\n

\nOn this occasion the book \u201c102, NOT OUT\u201d written by 102 year
\nold IS Ahuja was released by veteran film journalist and founder Asian Film
\nFestival Aruna Vasudev in the presence of Mr Ahuja\u2019s family members.<\/div>\n
