Governor, Delhi appreciated the efforts of AVM<br \/>\nVinod Rawat (Retd.), Prof. P.S.Ramakrishnan, and&nbsp; Dr.Surya Prakash of WWN for taking up the<br \/>\nrestoration work in Sanjay Van. He said that all citizens should make concerted<br \/>\nefforts to preserve ecological and bio-cultural heritage. He further explained<br \/>\nthe problem of weeds and how it degrades the growing plants. He advised the<br \/>\nschool children present on the occasion to avoid habits which like the<br \/>\nweeds-stunt their growth and development in life. He also visited the highest<br \/>\nvantage point which organizers later referred as the Tejendra Point.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;\">\nThis site is at<br \/>\na vantage point from where one can enjoy the scenic beauty of Sanjay Van,<br \/>\nobserve its flora, fauna and even spot Qutab Minar and ruins of Prithivi Raj<br \/>\nChauhan era etc. Massive tree plantation by school children and locals, tree<br \/>\ntalks, bird watching etc. will also be organized.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;\">\nAs per direction<br \/>\nof His Excellency Sh.Tejendra Khanna, Hon\u2019ble Lt. Governor, Delhi, WWN under<br \/>\nits founder Air Vice Marshal (Retd.)Vinod Rawat is working with DDA to restore<br \/>\nSanjay Van by adopting scientific approach.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThis will help in restoring the ancient ridge forest and stop its<br \/>\nfurther degradation.&nbsp; A team of WWN volunteers<br \/>\nalong with Prof. P.S.Ramakrishnan, a renowned ecologist; Dr.Surya Prakash, avid<br \/>\nbird watcher, Prof. K.S.Rao, an ecologist from Delhi University and nature<br \/>\nlovers from local area are making concerted efforts to restore the forest.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;\">\nDelhi<br \/>\nDevelopment Authority in association with \u2018Working With Nature\u2019, an NGO has<br \/>\ntaken up the restoration of Sanjay Van with the following objectives:<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 1.0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.5in;\">\n1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To restore Sanjay Van<br \/>\nand replicate its restoration model to other ridges of Delhi.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 1.0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.5in;\">\n2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To work towards making a<br \/>\nbird sanctuary for Delhi at Sanjay Van.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 1.0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.5in;\">\n3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To educate school<br \/>\nchildren on awareness towards environment and connecting them to nature.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 1.0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.5in;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sanjay<br \/>\nVan is spread over an area of 783 acres and was carved out by DDA to conserve<br \/>\nand develop it into a green forest and its restoration is crucial in<br \/>\nmaintaining the ecological balance of South Delhi.&nbsp; To restore and conserve native Aravali<br \/>\nvegetation, a continuous process around 40000 native trees have been<br \/>\ngrown.&nbsp; This includes species like Dhak<br \/>\n\u201cFlame of the forest\u201d (<i>Butea monosperma),<\/i> Khain (<i>Acacia catechu),<\/i><br \/>\nKhejri (<i>Prosopis cineraria) <\/i>etc. Trees such as Hingot (<i>Balanites<br \/>\nroxburghii)<\/i>, Ronjh (<i>acacia leucophloea), <\/i>Siris (<i>Albezia leback)<br \/>\netc.<\/i> and indigenous species like neem, Kala siris etc. have been raised<br \/>\nthrough seeds, nurturing\/transplanting germinated saplings.&nbsp; Other bird friendly species like Semal, Fig,<br \/>\nKadamb, Jamun, Imli, Peepul, Banyan etc have also been planted.&nbsp; Ber (<i>Zizyphus sp.)<\/i> bushes which once<br \/>\nflourished in this area have also been revived after many years through better<br \/>\nrain water management.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The<br \/>\nspread of Vilaiti Keekar (<i>Prosopis juliflora)<\/i> has also been controlled<br \/>\nto a great extent by eradicating its seed pods, uprooting young saplings<br \/>\netc.&nbsp; Water harvesting structure and<br \/>\ncleaning of discharge sewage water\/effluents is being planned on priority.&nbsp; Apart from recharging underground water it<br \/>\nwill also help restoration of natural biodiversity and arrest erosion of soil.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Number<br \/>\nof steps has been initiated to make a bird sanctuary at Sanjay Van mainly by<br \/>\nselective planting of Fauna friendly vegetation, cleaning of discharged<br \/>\nsewerage water\/effluents from ponds, appropriate vegetation all around water<br \/>\nbody and introduction of bird friendly fishes in ponds.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To<br \/>\neducate school children on awareness towards environment, the students were<br \/>\ntaken to Sanjay Van at regular intervals for jungle trails, bird watching,<br \/>\nplanting trees, removing plastics etc.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nDuring the celebration a site is<br \/>\nbeing developed at a vantage point from where one can enjoy the scenic beauty<br \/>\nof Sanjay Van, observe its flora, fauna and even spot Qutab Minar and ruins of<br \/>\nPrithivi Raj Chauhan era etc. massive tree plantation by school children and<br \/>\nlocals, tree talks, bird watching etc. will be organized.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sh.Tejendra Khanna, Lt.
