We have sent the drafts to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), CBSE and Union Human Resource Minister Ms Smriti Irani for evaluation and incorporation ” said Mr K.K.Kapila, Chairman, International Road Federation (IRF) .

“ Initially the chapter on road safety will be included in four subjects — Social Science, Hindi, English and Maths for classes VI to X. “We have hired a team of experienced teachers from different Delhi schools as well as illustrators to design the chapters coupled with graphics and exercises. Once the ministry gives its approval, these chapters will be integrated into the existing curriculum with approval from CBSE Curriculum committee,” said KK Kapila, chairman, IRF.

“However, the committee will try and include road safety in other subjects such as geometry, geography and science, among others. Road Safety will be integrated in normal syllabus and almost in all subjects with no extra classes. The chapters will edify students on how to cross a street safely and correctly and will also comprise lessons on understanding traffic signs, highway codes, road norms, traffic hazards and safety on roads among others.” he said.

“It is a great initiative in educating the next generation about the traffic safety norms. The inclusion of the chapter on road safety will consistently help to reduce accidents in the Capital if teachers, who are already being imparted training can teach traffic lessons to students. Apart from lessons, Mock plays, Action songs and live demonstration will be part of the curriculum,” Said Rohit Baluja , President, IRTE .

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) plans to incorporate chapters in the school curriculum to impart students of middle and secondary classes lessons on road safety and rules in the coming new academic year 2015-16. “The curriculum drafts have been prepared and the chapters will be included in the books prepared by International Road Federation (IRF) , a Geneva based global body working for safer roads worldwide along with Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) with help from group of school teachers in the academic year 2015-16.
