With growing influence in international diplomacy and culture, India’s presence continues to shine brighter. Among the many individuals contributing to this global success is Manoj Dhalumal Kotwani, widely known as Sammy Kotwani.

Born on November 5th, 1969, in Mumbai, Sammy is now a citizen of the Russian Federation. He is an alumnus of the Sasmira Institute of Textiles at the University of Mumbai and the English Tailor & Cutter Academy (Institute of Silk) in London. In 1988, he began working in his family’s business, and in 1990, he moved to Moscow to embark on his entrepreneurial journey. By 1994, he had founded “The Imperial Tailoring Co,” establishing a name for himself in Russia’s business landscape. After spending over three and a half decades in Russia, his success story continues to inspire.
Recently, Prof. S.S. Dogra, our Bureau Chief in Delhi, interviewed Sammy Kotwani to learn more about his remarkable journey. Here are some excerpts from that conversation.

• Who is your most favourite Indian and global leader?
It is my firm belief that Mr. Narendra Modi, the Honorable Prime Minister of India, is an exceptional leader who has demonstrated remarkable vision and dedication in guiding our great nation. On the global stage, I hold Mr. Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, in high esteem for his strategic leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening international cooperation.

• What do you think on Indo-Russian relationship?
Since India’s independence, the relationship between our nation and the Soviet Union, and now the Russian Federation, has been akin to that of steadfast allies. This long-standing partnership has only grown stronger over the years, marked by a deep cultural affinity and shared geopolitical interests. The vibrant cultural exchanges, such as the grand celebrations of Indian festivals like Yoga Day, Diwali, and Holi, further cement the bond between our peoples.

• When and how you settled in Russia?
In the 1990s, I made the decision to establish my presence in the USSR, drawn by the significant diplomatic community and the opportunity to provide high-quality, tailored suits to the esteemed diplomats stationed there. This move allowed me to contribute to the growing commercial ties between India and the Soviet Union.

• Being Indian, What challenges you faced in Russia?
As an Indian residing in Russia, I have encountered certain cultural and culinary adjustments. The Russian cuisine, while delectable, often lacks the spiciness that we Indians cherish. However, the warmth and hospitality extended by the Russian people have helped me, and other Indians, feel at home. The language barrier, though challenging at times, has been overcome through perseverance and the embrace of the local culture.
• What’s your view on Russia-Ukrain Conflict?
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is a complex issue with deep historical and cultural roots. I believe that these two nations, bound by shared heritage and familial ties, should find a path to resolving their differences through diplomatic means. Any prolonged confrontation between them is highly undesirable, as it not only impacts the regional stability but also has far-reaching global implications.
• Can you elaborate on your efforts in Russia?
As an Indian in Russia, I’ve worked to strengthen cultural ties between the two nations. One of my proudest achievements was organizing the India Day festival, which attracted over two million attendees. I am also the President of several organizations like the Indian Business Alliance and the Indian National Culture Center, promoting Indian culture in Russia.”

• What are the main objectives of the Indo-Russian Business Alliance?
Our primary goal is to enhance economic and commercial ties between India and Russia. We aim to assist Indian businesses entering the Russian market and provide support in navigating legal and regulatory challenges.

• How do you feel about your tailoring business?
Tailoring has been my lifelong passion. Creating bespoke garments that meet each client’s unique needs is something I take pride in. Over 35 years, I’ve built a respected business, dressing high-profile clients, including seven heads of state.

• Has the Indian government recognized your efforts in Russia?
While I have not been formally recognized by the Indian government, my dedication to promoting Indian art, culture, and heritage in Russia is a labor of love. True patriotism doesn’t always come with awards; the satisfaction of fostering cross-cultural understanding is its own reward.
• What is the process for migrating to Russia?
Migration to Russia usually involves securing a work permit, a student visa, or applying for residency through investment or family reunification. The process depends on the individual’s nationality and purpose of stay.
• How do you view the Russian media?
Russian media, like in many countries, reflects a variety of perspectives. It’s important for readers to approach media content critically, cross-referencing facts to form balanced opinions.
• What is your next initiative in Russia?
My upcoming initiative is expanding India Day celebrations to other major cities in Russia. The event, which has been a huge success in Moscow, is an opportunity to showcase Indian culture to more people across Russia.
• What is your opinion on Prime Minister Modi’s leadership?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an exceptional leader with a clear vision for India’s future. His dedication is transforming India into a global powerhouse, it’s really commendable indeed and under his leadership, I am confident that India will continue to thrive and ascend to new heights.
• What is your life’s mission?
My mission in life is to spread kindness and positivity, embrace diverse cultures, and find joy in each moment. Success isn’t just about reaching a destination but enjoying the journey.

India is making a significant impact globally, with its talent and innovation being recognized across a broad range of sectors.
