Dogra)

Every year on June 6, the world celebrates Russian Language Day, a significant occasion established by the United Nations to honor one of its six official languages and to recognize the immense contribution of the Russian language to world civilization. The date coincides with the birth anniversary of Alexander Pushkin, widely regarded as the father of modern Russian literature and one of the greatest literary figures in human history.

Language is more than a means of communication; it is a repository of a nation’s culture, history, philosophy, and collective memory. The Russian language, spoken by millions across the globe, has produced a remarkable body of literature that has enriched humanity’s intellectual and artistic heritage. Russian Language Day provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the language itself but also to appreciate the literary treasures it has given to the world.

At the heart of this celebration stands Alexander Pushkin, whose influence on Russian literature remains unparalleled. Before Pushkin, literary Russian was often distant from the language spoken by ordinary people. Through his poetry, prose, and dramatic works, Pushkin blended the elegance of literary expression with the richness of everyday speech, creating a modern literary language that became accessible to all. His masterpieces, including Eugene Onegin, The Captain’s Daughter, and numerous lyrical poems, continue to inspire readers and writers across generations.

Pushkin’s contribution extends beyond literature. He became a symbol of intellectual freedom, creativity, and national identity. His works explored universal themes of love, honor, freedom, and human dignity, making them relevant far beyond the borders of Russia. For many scholars, Pushkin occupies a place in Russian culture comparable to Shakespeare in English literature.

The significance of Russian literature, however, extends far beyond Pushkin. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries witnessed an extraordinary flowering of literary genius. Writers such as Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Turgenev, Nikolai Gogol, and Maxim Gorky produced works that profoundly influenced global thought and literature.

Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Anna Karenina explored the complexities of human relationships, morality, and history. Dostoevsky delved deep into the human psyche, examining questions of faith, guilt, justice, and redemption in novels such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov. Chekhov revolutionized modern storytelling through his subtle portrayal of everyday life and human emotions.
Russian literature is renowned for its philosophical depth, psychological insight, and moral inquiry. It challenges readers to confront fundamental questions about human existence, social responsibility, and spiritual values. In an age increasingly dominated by technology and instant communication, these timeless literary works continue to offer wisdom, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the human condition.

Russian Language Day also holds special significance for me as an author. My sixth book, “Udachi Vaam” (“Good Luck to You”), was written in the Russian language and dedicated to the great Russian painter, philosopher, explorer, and humanitarian Nicholas Roerich. Roerich’s deep spiritual connection with India, his artistic brilliance, and his enduring message of peace and cultural harmony continue to inspire people across nations. Through this dedication, I sought to pay tribute to the rich cultural and literary bonds that connect India and Russia.

The Russian language has served as a bridge between civilizations, fostering academic exchange, literary appreciation, and cultural friendship. My journey of writing in Russian reaffirmed my belief that literature transcends geographical boundaries and unites people through shared human values.
Russian Language Day also highlights the importance of multilingualism and intercultural dialogue. In today’s interconnected world, languages serve as bridges between peoples and cultures. Learning and appreciating different languages fosters mutual respect, global cooperation, and cultural understanding. The Russian language, with its rich literary and scientific traditions, remains an important medium of international communication and scholarship.

For students, educators and lovers of literature, Russian Language Day serves as a reminder of the transformative power of words. It encourages the study of great literary works that transcend national boundaries and speak to universal human experiences.

As we celebrate this day, we pay tribute to Alexander Pushkin and the generations of writers who transformed Russian literature into one of humanity’s greatest cultural achievements. Their works continue to illuminate minds, inspire creativity, and strengthen the bonds of understanding among people across the world.
Russian Language Day is not merely a celebration of a language; it is a celebration of the enduring power of literature to unite humanity through knowledge, imagination and shared human values.

(By Prof. S.S.
