The production, presented by Guy Masterson TTI in association with Passion Pit Theatre, will tour India as part of the international solo theatre festival next year.

The selection followed a jury evaluation process at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where members of the Going Solo jury attended performances of shortlisted productions before announcing their final decision.

Scaramouche Jones tells the story of a hundred-year-old clown reflecting on his life as the 20th century draws to a close. Exploring themes of love, brutality, tragedy, comic misadventures and the decline of empires, the play uses seven white masks to portray the experiences of a man whose life has been shaped by a rapidly changing world.

The international jury comprised Reena Wadhwa, presenter of Going Solo and an actor and arts entrepreneur; Nelson Fernandez, who brings experience in performing arts; Laura Mackenzie Stuart, an internationally experienced theatre producer and programmer and former Deputy Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe; and Jo Laidlaw.

Announcing the selection, Sanjoy K. Roy, Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, said the festival seeks to identify solo performances that leave a lasting impression on audiences. He noted that Scaramouche Jones stood out among the productions presented at the Edinburgh Fringe and expressed delight at bringing the production to Indian audiences.

The jury also recognised two other productions with cash awards. Slay, written and performed by Lois-Amber Toole and directed by Anna Morris, secured the First Runner-Up position, while James Rowland: Team Viking, performed by James Rowland, was named Second Runner-Up.

Reena Wadhwa, Presenter and Jury Member of the Going Solo Theatre Festival, highlighted the unique ability of solo performers to establish a powerful connection with audiences and transport them into different worlds. She described the experience of watching the shortlisted productions at the Edinburgh Fringe as an exciting part of the selection process.

Going Solo is India’s only international solo theatre festival, celebrating individual performance and bringing outstanding theatre productions from across the world to Indian audiences. Its 2027 edition will showcase selected performances from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe across various Indian cities.

The initiative also aims to create opportunities for Indian solo theatre productions to gain international exposure, including future presentations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The festival is organised by Teamwork Arts, an Indian cultural organisation with more than three decades of experience in promoting performing arts, visual arts, literature and cultural exchange. The organisation produces over 33 festivals annually across 45 cities and 19 countries and is also known for organising the Jaipur Literature Festival.

Further details regarding the 2027 festival schedule, Indian venues and performance dates of Scaramouche Jones are expected to be announced by the organisers.

Justin Butcher’s solo theatre production selected at Edinburgh Festival Fringe; ‘Slay’ and ‘James Rowland: Team Viking’ named runners-up (By Prof. S.
