The government launched a web portal for basic citizen services like driving license and vehicle registration. Launching the portal,www.parivahan.gov.in, minister for Road transport and highways, C P Joshi said the common man can use it. Mr Joshi said this is a landmark step in e-governance project. He also inaugurated the national register, which will create a data bank of all vehicles in the country. Our correspondent reports, the national register has been created from the state registers under National Transport Project to act as a central repository of all crucial data. Mr Joshi said it will provide basic citizen centric services to people anytime and anywhere in the country. The portal connects 975 regional transport offices of the country.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has been facilitating computerization of 975 Road Transport Offices (RTOs) across the country. RTOs issue Registration Certificate (RC) & Driving License (DL) that are valid across the country. It was necessary to define same standards for these documents on a pan-India level to ensure interoperability and correctness and timely availability of information. SCOSTA committee setup for this purpose had recommended a uniform standardized software across the country. Ministry entrusted National Informatics Centre the task to standardize & deploy the software VAHAN for Vehicle Registration and SARATHI for Driving Licenses and compilation of data with respect to Vehicle Registration and Driving Licenses of all the states in State Register and National Register.
