DELHI TO BE ACCIDENT BLACK SPOT FREE

Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has sanctioned Rs 10 Crore to Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) for mapping entire Delhi for road accident investigation to determine black spots linked to road related deficiencies and suggesting road engineering measures for their removal for reducing fatal road accidents in the capital.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announcing this at the two day seminar on ‘Status of Road Safety and Safe Mobility Initiative in India’ jointly organised by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) and International Road Federation (IRF) late last evening said “ The CRRI will identify the regular accident spots in the capital and find out Road Infrastructure Deficiencies which are major cause of recurring of accidents at same spot . It will also suggest engineering interventions for implementation of appropriate improvement measures to curtain accidents at the same spot”.

“Some accident black spots have already been identified by various authorities including CRRI and Delhi police and some have been rectified , but accident spots keep changing. Many spots or road sections that have similar features show a high frequency of accidents. This means that the particular road environment instigates inappropriate driver responses leading to accidents . To identify and examine these locations and to characterize the safety deficiencies is a challenge for road engineers. The mere appearance of an accumulation of accidents with similar characteristics offers excellent guidance as to where to apply appropriate traffic engineering treatments that helps to increase the safety of all road users.” Said Mr Gadkari.

“Similar funds will be offered to various states in the country to identify black spots and find engineering measures to rectify them. The road Ministry will provide 50 per cent of the cost for road engineering measures to the states”said Mr Gadkari.

Mr Gadkari launched a road safety website on the occasion and gave away Road Safety Awards to state organizations. The awardees included AP State Road Transport Corporation, Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation, State Transport, Haryana, Odisha State Road Transport Corporation, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and Nagaland State Transport.
