WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATED IN DWARKA


Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi Sanstha of Dwarka celebrated World Environment Day on 16th June 2012 in DDA park behind Maneesh Mall, Sector-22, Dwarka. This is the day when the first Conference on the Human Environment concluded in the year 1972 with the decision to celebrate World Environment Day on 5th June every year under United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).The conference was convened in Stockholm (Sweden) from 5th to 16th June 1972 on the initiative of Swedish Government and was attended by representatives of 113 countries and many others. This programme is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme. The first World Environment Day was celebrated on 5th June 1973. India was the global host of the World Environment Day, in the year 2011. Environment Day is now further celebrated in all parts of the world to create awareness about the environmental needs and get the people involved in this noble cause from all walks of life. 


The celebration by Sukh Dukh ke Sathi Sanstha was worth seen. A glorious painting competition of children was held, in which main focus was on lesser privileged class. Thirty children participated in this competition, including children of nearby residents. Chief guest Shri Rajesh Gehlot, Counselor, Chairman Standing Committee and ex-Dy. Mayor of MCD inspired the children and distributed prizes to the winners. Consolation prizes were also given to all other children. The prizes were sponsored by State Bank of India (Branch Sector 23, Dwarka). Branch Manager Shri Rakesh Kumar attended the function also and planted saplings together with the Chief Guest who inaugurated the Plantation Drive of the Sanstha for this year by planting an “Amaltash” tree. Twenty five trees of different types were planted with participation of distinguished guests from other associations of the area as well as members of the Sanstha, setting a target of planting 800 to 1000 saplings by Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi Sanstha in Sectors 22 & 23 of Dwarka in this pre-monsoon season, with co-operation of Horticulture Department of the DDA. Five hundred trees, decorative plants and shrubs were planted by the Sanstha during past year. 

The Chief Guest Shri Rejesh Gehlot, Acting President of the Sanstha Shri S.P.S. Chauhan, Jt. Secretary Shri P.B. Mishra and Shri P.K. Datta, a well known naturalist, narrated dangers of the diminishing environmental conditions and demand of the time to save the environment. Capt SS Mann of the Sanstha gave details of the developmental activities and future plans of the Sanstha. All the speakers explained and stressed that even a small effort put by each person can go a long way in saving the environment. The youth, children, elderly people, male, female – everybody can contribute to save the environment just by taking small precautions in their daily life like saving water & electricity, avoiding use of polythene, tree plantation & kitchen gardening, proper disposal of domestic waste, minimal use of cars and so on so forth. Everyone felt that such functions should be undertaken more often as such drives inculcate sense of responsibility towards environment, particularly in younger generations.

The celebration ended with vote of thanks by the Secretary of the Sanstha Shri S.C. Chawla and refreshment to all. The concern of participants regarding the flora and fauna of our planet was very reassuring. People gathered in the function from various walks of life pledged their support in this function to make the surroundings more eco friendly.
