14th November is celebrated as World Diabetes Day since 1991 by International Diabetes Federation. Diabetes is most wide spread disease effecting human being. India has highest number of diabetic in the World. It is wide spread in numbers as well as in the context that it can affect any organ in the body right from hairs on the head to nails in the toes.
World Diabetes Day is observed to make people aware about the disease and its possible complications. Free camps are held by various bodies to check blood sugar along with giving information to public about various complications by way of health walk and audio visual presentations, media campaigns and seminars.
India unfortunately has been named as Diabetic capital of the World as largest number of diabetic are Indians. It is essentially a genetically transmitted disorder which can only be effectively prevented by more scientific developments, public awareness and acceptance of premarital genetic counselling. The increased blood sugar level damages the smallest of blood vessels and nerves, causing microangioneuropathy. Needless to say this essential pathology damages every organ of body. The involvement of Heart/ brain / Kidney and eyes could lead to morbidity and mortality to dangerous propositions.
Since it is largely a silent disease, its diagnosis can only be done by simple blood sugar test which is essential for every healthy individual atleast one in a year and more often for those who have a family history of diabetes.
Always Remember! Diabetes can cause silent heart attack and sudden death. On the other hand diabetics can lead a normal life by good life style management, consistent vigilance, regular medical and laboratory check up, perfect punctuality in medicine and diet schedule and early diagnosis and management of complications.
