Electricity not only is one of the most important utilities, it is also one of the most expensive. Is your electricity bill emptying your pockets each month?

Start saving money now with these 5 easy-to-implement tips:

1. Use LED or fluorescent light bulbs.
One LED light bulb is equal to about 25 traditional light bulbs. They may cost more than a traditional bulb, but you will save a lot of money in the long run. Fluorescent light bulbs are another alternative. Not only are they cost-effective, but also better for the environment.

2. Cover Your Windows
The winter months are quickly approaching. One of the easiest ways to keep your house warm and cozy without adjusting the thermostat is to cover your windows with a clear plastic sheet and tape it inside of your window frame. This will keep the heat in, and the cold out!

3. Wash Clothes with Cold Water
Did you know that washing your clothes in cold water saves energy? Today’s laundry detergents are even made to work with cold water.

4. Turn Off the Lights
We’ve all made the mistake before: leaving the lights on when leaving a room. One tip to help your family or your housemates remember to turn off the lights when they leave the room is to have an “electricity jar.” Every time you catch someone leave a room without turning off the lights, make them donate a quarter or dollar to the jar. That oughtta break the habit pretty quickly!

5. Don’t Charge Your Phone Overnight
Charging cell phones, and even tablets or MP3 players overnight is a big culprit of using unnecessary electricity. Most of these devices only need a few hours until they reach a complete charge. Instead of charging while you’re sleeping, make a habit of charging your electronics during your morning routine, while you’re making dinner or during other short activities.
