Gurudev describes Shivaratri thus :
Shiva means Good, benevolent : Shivaratri has been connected to destruction. Transformation can happen only when something is destroyed. You can call it destruction or transformation – change from something to something better. Shiva is the factor of transformation. Actually, Shankara means one who gives peace and does so much good.
On Shivaratri, it is total energy coming into the whole universe – Shiva Shakti coming from all the lingans, joining, merging. If you chant “OM NAMAH SHIVAYE” and think of Lord Shiva all day, you get rid of your sins. Only after you get rid of the sins, can good activity start.
