INDIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, DWARKA celebrated WORLD AIDS DAY on 1st dec 09. The main function was held at DMA house, Daryaganj. where a workshop was organized for doctors about latest diagnostic tools and treatment of HIV infection. An exhibition and painting competition was also held on the theme of AIDS.
DR AMITABH KHANNA ,PRESIDENT IMA Dwarka told estimates show that there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV out of which 2.5 million are children. Around half the people get infected with HIV before they are 25 yrs old and are killed by AIDS before they are35. About 95% of all these cases are in developing countries.
DR KHANNA TOLD Dwarka Parichay as per the data from WHO & UNAIDS India has world’s third largest population suffering from AIDS after South Africa & Nigeria. Delhi being home to more than 40,000 afflicted person and at least a million people vulnerable. However the estimated no of HIV infections in India has declined drastically in recent years and India has also been praised for its extensive AIDS campaign.Next year in the commonwealth game a large no of foreign tourist will come to Delhi increasing the risk of spread of disease manifold. So far the spread of HIV infection in India is primarily restricted to the southern and north-eastern regions of country. he added that the main factors that have contributed to INDIA’s large HIV positive population are unsafe sexual practices, intravenous drug usage, gayism, and hugely experimenting sexually active younger population.
He concluded that On the occasion of WORLD AIDS DAY we all should take pledge to impart message of safe sex, avoidance of high risk behavior and attitude of non discrimination and compassion towards patients of HIV /AIDS. He also requested all the doctors of Dwarka to give free advise to all the HIV /AIDS patients. He requested all the residents to get HIV checked immediately in case of doubt and also to give blood donations regularly.
