The National Union of Journalists (India) has strongly condemns brutal attack on scribes and crew of the Malayama Manorama and Manorama TV news channel by Communist Party of India (Marxist) affiliated Student Federation of India (SFI) activists on Wednesday and termed the incident as an effort to suppress the freedom of press in the country. NUJ(I) President Mr P K Roy and Secretary General Mr Atmdeep have expressed serious concern over rising attacks on media persons through out the country by radical political and social organisations. In a joint statement issued on New Delhi today Mr.Roy and Mr Atmdeep said that the unprovoked attack on the media persons in Kottayam was latest in fast growing tendency of ruling left party cadres in Kerala to terrorise independent media persons and organisations in the state.Terming the incident as assault on freedom of press in the country NUJ(I) has asked for immediate arrest and strong legal action against the persons involved Kottayam incident where Manorama TV reporter Pradeep Joseph and the Malayama Manorama newspaper journalist Nishant Kurian and three of their colleagues were seriously injured in SFI attack. They had gone to a spot to cover an incident of clash between SFI and affiliated Kerala Students Union activists.NUJ(I) expressed sympathy with injured media persons and their colleagues. Mr Roy and Mr Atmdeep asked centre and state governments to take appropriate measures to effectively check these kind of incidents in any part of the country. NUJ(I) has also asked for due compensation to the injured media persons in Kottayam.
