Sapna – A Promosing Dancer

Sapna Attavar, 2nd year BA student of Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University, is a Bharatanatyam dancer. This twenty year old girl is a disciple of Guru Smt. Kanaka Sudhakar, a renowned Bharatanatyam dance exponent, and Founder-Director, Nrityabharati. Sapna has been learning Bharatanatyam from Guru Smt. Kanaka Sudhakar for over ten years. Sapna has completed her graduation in Bharatanatyam from Nrityabharati, affiliated to Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya, Miraj. She performed her ‘Arangetram’ (or Rangapravesh’) in the Delhi Karnataka Sangha auditorium on 23 October 2011. Along with her BA programme in English and French, Jesus & Mary College in Delhi University, Sapna is also pursuing presently, post-graduation in Bharatanatyam.

Sapna has participated and won several prizes at national level, state level and inter-school competitions. Prominent among these are Global Harmony Festival in Pune and the state level MTNL Perfect Health Mela held in Delhi every year. Sapna has represented her college at inter-college fests in Bharatanatyam as well as folk dances and won several prizes in various colleges. During her school days, Sapna won a Rolling Shield for her school at a classical dance competition organized by Urvi Vikram Charitable Trust, Dwarka.

Sapna has gone on stage at several auditoriums in Delhi and outside. She has given a one hour solo performance at the hallowed precincts at Lord Krishna temple, in Udupi Karnataka, in January 2012; and has also given solo performances at Ayyappa temples in Rohini and RK Puram, Delhi Tamil Sangam, Delhi Karnataka Sangha, etc. Sapna’s dances have been recorded and telecast by Doordarshan (Delhi), Sree Sankara channel (Bangalore), and Chennai’s Jaya TV (Taka Dhimi Taa). Having exhibited her talent at various temples and pandals in innumerable religious and social functions including Birla Mandir during Janmashtami, Ganesh Pooja and Durga Pooja festivals, Sapna is a regular feature at the annual Janmashtami celebrations at Golokdham Temple, Dwarka. She is also a recipient of the Venkataraman Iyer Award of Excellence for special achievement in Bharatanatyam in November 2011.

Very recently, in the august presence of Shri Kapil Sibal Union Minister for Telecommunications and Dr. Dinesh Singh Vice Chancellor University, Sapna inaugurated ‘Antardhvani’ 2013 – a Delhi University fest organized by DU’s Culture Council, at the Main Indoor Stadium in North campus, in front of an audience of over two thousand people. Sapna also inaugurated a film festival organized by Character Development Initiative, an NGO, at the Hungarian Information & Cultural Centre in February 2013.

In September 2012, Sapna gave an hour long interview to All India Radio Delhi’s FM Rainbow, when she co-anchored a programme called ‘Aashiyana’. 

Sapna’s exploits are not limited to dance alone. She has many other achievements to her credit. During her school days she was an active member of Bharat Scouts & Guides programme. Sapna was awarded the Rajya Puraskar by Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Delhi Shri Tejinder Khanna in April 2008. Sapna received “Rashtrapathi Guide” certificate in August 2009. All these achievements of Sapna made her a winning candidate for Best Student – Extra Curricular Activities, a glittering trophy being awarded to her by Shri Syed Shahnawaz Hussain at Radisson Blu in Dwarka in November 2012. Sapna’s selection for the award was made by a panel of eminent and distinguished persons from Dwarka.

Gifted with an inborn love and burning passion for this art form, Sapna’s performances are marked with intense involvement as she identifies herself with the characters she represents on stage. Her crisp footwork and clear expressions, combined with graceful yet energetic movements, have endeared her to audiences in Delhi and outside.
