Senior citizens in the National Capital Region have urged the Union Urban development Ministry and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for introduction of separate dedicated coach in the lines of women coach for the elderly in the metro trains .
“ As per statistics Delhi and the NCR region has more than Three million senior citizens out of the total of 90 million in the country. Most of them depend heavily on Metro rail for their means of transportation as it is safe, affordable and faster mode of travel. In day to day use of metro they find it difficult to board general compartments having two to four seats dedicated to elderly and handicapped. They get pushed and jostled , thus a dedicated coach exclusively for senior citizens will be of great help” said Mr K.K.Kapila, Patron in chief , Delhi/NCR Senior Citizen’s Welfare Association (DSCWA) and also Chairman, International Road Federation (IRF) while speaking at a function to mark the Senior citizen’s solidarity day here today.
“Elderly have major role in the society a dedicated coach for us will make us feel important and show that society cares for us. In today’s world senior citizens should not feel neglected or isolated due to use of social media by younger generation , they should adopt social media and adopt it to their advantage. Social media provides them with the opportunity to engage with others and feel connected to family and friends who they previously felt distant from. ” said Mr Kapila.
“Delhi and NCR has more than Three million senior citizens, It is important to work out schemes and plans to help the elderly contribute to society. Delhi needs new recreational centres for senior citizens that should offer the aged a space to come away from home, for relaxation and leisure, and also relieve the responsibility for their care from family members who may need to be away at work in the day,” said Ms Sheila Dikshit former Delhi Chief minister while inaugurating the senior citizen’s solidarity day.
She also released a directory of Senior citizens. Those who were present on the occasion included formed Delhi minister Kiran Walia, , S S Rudra, Executive secretary of senior citizens welfare association and Mr ON Sharma, President, of the Association .
