Delhi will set up three more power stations to generate 2,800 mw of extra electricity during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. This expected to meet the growing requirement of the National Capital and also demands during the Commonwealth Games 2010. Delhi’s total installed capacity was 932.40 mw on March 31, 2006 and its share in the central sector power station under northern region, including hydro, thermal and nuclear power, was 2,987.8 mw. The state government also plans to rationalise water distribution with the construction of more underground reservoirs. Two water treatment plants will be constructed at Dwarka (40 mgd) and Okhla (20 mgd) for drinking water. Plans are also on to start construction of Renuka reservoir through Himachal Pradesh to ensure the availability of more water to the Capital. The Planning Commission has raised the annual Plan size for Delhi in 2007-08 to Rs 9,000 crore from Rs 5,200 crore this fiscal, an increase of 73%. The Plan size was finalised at a meeting between Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday. Delhi needed to develop world-class infrastructure, Ahluwalia said. He also complimented the state government for significant improvement in the green cover. The total forest and tree cover has increased to 268 sq. km in 2007 from 151 sq. km in 2001. ( The Financial Express )
