Archery Stadium at Yamuna Sports Complex inaugurated

Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of Urban Development, Government of India inaugurated the Archery Stadium constructed by DDA at Yamuna Sports Complex, Surajmal Vihar, Delhi -110092 today i.e. 5th March, 2010 at 4.30 p.m. Shri Tejendra Khanna, Lt. Governor, Delhi presided over the inaugural function and Shri Naseeb Singh,MLA graced the occasion by his presence. Senior officers of DDA and sports persons were also present.

Speaking on the occasion the Minister for Urban Development while appreciating the role of DDA in providing infrastructure for the Commonwealth Games said that DDA has taken the responsibility to take sports in Delhi to international levels and in this regard the Sports Complex at Saket and Yamuna Sports Complexes are being upgraded to international level. He also complimented the DDA for the development of Games Village which will provide accommodation for 8000 players and officials and according to him, it is a good example of Public Private Participation. Giving details of the various timelines for completion of various venues he said that the Stadium at Siri Fort Sports Complex where events of badminton and squash will be held, will be completed by March, 2010. Yamuna Sports Complex where the event of Table Tennis will be held, will be completed by June end. He informed that the Ministry has made a provision of Rs.837.85 crores for Commonwealth Games related projects besides a provision for Rs.79.20 crores for security setup. D.D.A. will also spend about Rs.500.46 crores for the Games. He also informed that the foundation for the Yamuna Sports Complex was laid by late Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi on 13th June, 1989. He assured that there will be no let up in completion of the Commonwealth Games related projects and all the works will be done as per the timelines laid.

Lt. Governor while addressing the gathering appreciated the role of D.D.A. and said that D.D.A. has worked hard for the past 52 years but the development has not been sufficient to meet the growing needs of increasing population. Therefore, provisions have been made in the new Master Plan – 2021. He assured that in future Delhi will be equipped for better facilities for citizens. Emphasizing the need for quality control and quality compliance he said that there should be 100 % professionalism in discharge of duties as otherwise there will not be convergence with the Mission of D.D.A. He congratulated the officers of D.D.A. for completing the project on time despite time constraints.

While welcoming the distinguished guests, Vice-chairman, D.D.A said that this a proud moment for D.D.A. and also for the denizens of Delhi as Delhi is slowly equipping itself to play host to one of world’s most spectacular sport events: the Commonwealth Games. According to him, stadiums at Siri Fort Sports Complex and Yamuna Sports Complex the training facilities at Saket Sports Complex, apartments at Vasant Kunj and Jasola are being equipped especially for Games purpose, have been undertaken by DDA to provide the players with best in infrastructure, accommodation and surroundings. Steps have been taken to ensure adherence to eco-friendly norms for development of sports and civic infrastructure in the projects.

Giving details of the Archery Stadium inaugurated today, he said that aesthetically designed state-of-art Archery Stadium, spread over an area of 4.8 hectares, at Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar, East Delhi and is one of the Games venues being developed by DDA at a cost of Rs.25.00 crores. It has a capacity to seat 1500 spectators and preliminary rounds in Archery for the Games will be held here from 4th to 6th October, 2010. The ground floor of the stadium has spectators seating, airconditioned lounges, change rooms, facilities for medical and physiotherapy, doping control, logistics, cafeteria etc. It has easy accessibility for differently-abled persons and ramp provisions have been laid for their easy movement. Parking facility for about 500 cars has also been provided. He expressed his gratitude to the Hon’ble Minister for Urban Development and Lt. Governor Delhi under whose guidance all the projects are being monitored.

It may be mentioned that DDA’s Yamuna Sports Complex situated at Surajmal Vihar, East Delhi is about 9.4 Kms from Commonwealth Games Village. It has over 8000 members and provides facilities for over 18 sports disciplines including regular coaching in 15 disciplines. The Complex will be the competition venue for Commonwealth Games for Table Tennis and Preliminary Rounds of Archery. It will also be used for training venue for Archery, Table Tennis, Aquatics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls and Rhythmic Gymnastics.

DDA’s association with Commonwealth Games-2010 includes construction of Commonwealth Games Village for 8000 athletes and officials, competition and training venues at Siri Fort Sports Complex, Yamuna Sports Complex and Saket Sports Complex.
