Bariatric Surgery can remove Fat & Make you Fit.

Dr. Navdeep Chhabra,
M.B.B.S, MS

Obesity, the problem of being fat has been become the world’s major health concern. Modern life style is the main culprit which does not allow people to match the intake and output of calories. It goes without saying that the problems associated with obesity are high risk factors leading to heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke or paralysis, high blood cholesterol, infertility, joint pains, breathing problems, cancer and high blood sugar.

According to the National Family Health Survey carried out in 2007 every 1 Indian out of 20 is obese. No wonder obesity has truly become an epidemic of the present century! Today, Bariatric Surgery is the only modality offering significant, effective and sustained weight loss that is not possible with the other available current non-surgical regimens. Usually bariatric surgery is a laparoscopic surgery (‘key-hole surgery’-with 5 holes) so the rates of complications and risks are low. Hence, it is relatively safe and acceptable.

The treatment options need strict medical supervision. Dr. Navdeep Chhabra, MBBS, MS, a leading laproscopic surgeon informed Dwarka Parichay that Bariatric Surgery provides an excellent resolution of obesity related problems, so much so that in 80% to 90% there may be no need of medicines.

Treatment without surgery is the first logical option chosen by everyone. A diet low in calories, carbohydrates and fats, rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals; no fast food, more fruits, no snacks, 3 sensible meals and regular exercise form part of weight reduction programme.

Treatment with surgery involves removal of a part of the stomach leaving a narrow tube through which only small quantities of food can pass through. Laproscopic gastric banding is an operation where in an adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, leading to the creation of a small pouch with a small outlet for food to pass down slowly. This helps in restricting food intake.

According to Dr. Navdeep Chhabra the morbidly obese patients can look for a ray of hope in these technologically advanced methods of treatment. He has been invited to present his findings from his vast experience at the Annual Conference of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery to be held in June 2012 in the U.S. A graduate who did his post graduation also from Maulana Azad Medical College, one of the most reputed medical colleges of the Country, he has travelled the world over in connection with his surgical practice. He wishes people to remember that it is within their control to remain fit and not fat.
