DELHI TRAFFIC POLICE TO START DRIVER VERIFICATION SCHEME SOON IN CAPITAL SOON

Delhi’s Special Commissioner Traffic Dr Muktesh Chander, while speaking at the All India state government’s meet on road safety organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the International Road Federation (IRF) said “A form will be provided to a person employing a driver and which will have details of the driver. Delhi Traffic police will verify and provide full details of the driver including traffic and criminal offences committed by the driver”.

“This will be a free service provided to Delhi citizens and will help in checking crimes and also find a good driver. ” added Dr Chander.

“Delhi Traffic Police also plans to further go tough on drunken driving till date more than 4000 driving licences have been cancelled for repeated offence of drunked driving. Now we have also approached NCR cities by providing them offending drivers details, they have also cancelled number of driving licences”said Dr Chander.

“We have identified a space for dumping ten year old diesel vehicles in capital as ordered by NGT , if that space gets filled we will inform the State and Union goivernment to provide more space “sadsi Mr Chander 

Earlier Union Transport and Highway Secretary speaking at the meet said “ Centre and states need better coordination for reducing road accidents and addressing road safety concerns to achieve the target set under the UN Decade of Action , which envisages reduction in road fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2020”

“With road acidents on rise , the government is planning to set up dedicated body for ensuring better road safety and traffic managment in the country . The National Road Safety and Traffic Management Authority , which will act as dedicated agency to oversee road safety activity in the country will be set up before the new Motor vehicle amendment bill 2014 is passed in PArliament ” said Mr Chibber.

“ The states should also set up state safety authorities ,which will help in having unified driving license system and reduce duplication of license from regional transport offices. This will also help meet aim safety in construction, design of safer roads, strengthening vehicle inspection norms and taking unified steps for trauma care. This will help in avoiding Delhi NCR like situation where National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered ban on ten year old Diesel vehicles. Althought NGT has no juridiction on such issues ” said Mr Chhibber

“The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has been emphasizing on the need for a multi-sectoral approach to be adopted by the States towards Road Safety for achieving the targets. More than 1,37,572 people died in fatal road accidnets during the year 2013. The purpose of this Meet is to evaluate the various actions undertaken by the State Governments with regard to Road Safety as well as to understand the assistance that they may require from this Ministry “ said MR Vijay Chhibber.

“ During the State Government’s meet a presentation was made by each state representative covering the current road safety scenario in the State, uniqueness, advantages, bottlenecks and the efforts being undertaken to address these issues. This will then help in identifying the support required from the Ministry and IRF to achieve the targets under the UN Decade of Action.” Said MR K K Kapila, Chairman, International Road Federation (IRF).
