Gen Z’s Voice: The Road to a New Nepal

By Arun Raj Sumargi

In Kathmandu, the rising voice of Gen Z—the young, educated, and energetic citizens on the streets—has raised a question that resonates across the country: “Nepal, where are we heading?”

This voice carries a clear message. The nation, long trapped in the cycle of old politics, corruption, and failed leadership, is in dire need of fresh thinking, transparency, and good governance. Nepal’s political history has been shaped by movements, but the current wave is different. It is not merely a protest; it is a vision for the future.

The Aspirations of Gen Z

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z is globally aware, digitally connected, and deeply conscious of social realities. They are not content with simply expressing dissatisfaction; they demand solutions. Their vision is simple yet profound: a corruption-free, transparent and opportunity-rich Nepal.

The frustration among citizens is rooted in pressing realities:

Inequality in education, healthcare, and access to basic services.

Widespread unemployment and the compulsion of mass migration abroad.

Party-centric politics driven by self-interest and power games.

It is these failures that have brought youth to the streets, demanding change.

A New Possibility of Leadership

Figures like Balen Shah, Harka Sampang, and Gopi Hamal have ignited fresh hope, proving that alternative leadership can rise from within society. Their success signals that governance can improve if leaders embody honesty, accountability and efficiency.

What people want is clear: leaders who can deliver not just promises, but results.

Two Roads Ahead

Nepal now stands at a crossroads. Two possible paths lie ahead:

The path of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka – marked by unstable politics, flawed economic policies, and corruption, leading to crisis.

The path of transformation – driven by youth energy, people’s trust, and transparent leadership, leading to progress and stability.

The young protesters on the streets are clearly inspired by the second model. Their voices signal the beginning of a new political culture.

Shared Responsibility: People and Youth

Good governance cannot be built by leaders alone—it requires citizens to act responsibly. The Gen Z message is simple:

Every citizen must respect the law and vote consciously.

Corruption must be resisted, not tolerated.

Opportunities must be created within Nepal, ending the compulsion to migrate abroad.

If nations like Singapore and Finland could transform through vision and discipline, Nepal too can follow that model with the strength of its youth.

Hope for New Nepal

The current movement may appear as a momentary spark, but in truth, it is laying the foundation for Nepal’s future. Gen Z’s voice is not merely about protest—it is about building a New Nepal: corruption-free, transparent, and just.

This generation has declared they will not wait for change; they are ready to live the change. With positive energy, collective responsibility, and long-term planning, Nepal can indeed chart a new course of hope and progress.

Stand with Youth

The recent peaceful demonstrations, where innocent youth suffered suppression and some even went missing, have left the nation in grief. It is an irreparable loss for families and for Nepal as a whole.

Schools observed closures in solidarity, expressing condolences. In this time of sorrow, teachers must not only impart knowledge but also nurture values of compassion, justice, and peace. We must stand with our youth in their pursuit of a fair and just society.

To the departed souls, I offer heartfelt tribute. To their families and the people of Nepal, I extend deepest condolences and prayers for strength and healing.
