“Whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” — John 3:15
The life of Hanshi Dr. S. Rethinam, fondly remembered as Ratnam Sir, stands as a shining example of dedication, discipline and unwavering faith. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, students and the larger community he served with humility and strength. Yet, even in his physical absence, his influence continues to inspire and guide.
Ratnam Sir was more than an educator or martial arts master; he was a mentor who shaped character as much as skill. Carrying the revered title of “Hanshi,” he embodied mastery not only in his discipline but also in the philosophy of righteous living. His approach to training went far beyond physical techniques. He believed martial arts was a path to inner strength, moral clarity and disciplined living.
I had the privilege of meeting Ratnam Sir personally during 2004–2005, when a close friend of mine — a black belt holder and karate coach — invited him to Dwarka Health Club. What I witnessed that day remains etched in my memory. In a profound gesture of reverence, my friend Sunil washed Ratnam Sir’s feet and drank the same water as a mark of deep respect for his mentor. It was not an act of ritual, but of pure devotion and gratitude toward a guru who had shaped his life. That moment revealed the extraordinary bond he shared with his students — a relationship built on respect, discipline and heartfelt admiration.
Generations of students remember him as a firm disciplinarian who balanced strictness with compassion. His corrections were purposeful, his encouragement sincere and his expectations rooted in a desire to see every student excel — not only as athletes, but as responsible human beings. Many who trained under him have gone on to build successful careers, yet they continue to attribute their confidence and resilience to the foundation he laid.
At the core of his life was deep spiritual conviction. Guided by the timeless message of faith, particularly the assurance found in John 3:15, Ratnam Sir lived with humility and gratitude. His spirituality reflected in his calmness during adversity, his dignity in leadership and his quiet acts of service.
As a family man, he was a pillar of wisdom and strength. He nurtured his children with patience and guided relatives with thoughtful counsel. To his students, he extended fatherly care, often mentoring them beyond the training floor. His life demonstrated that leadership is most powerful when rooted in service rather than authority.
The observance of his 30th day prayer gathering in Chennai is not merely a ceremonial remembrance; it is a testament to the countless lives he touched. Family members, relatives and students gathering together in prayer reflect the enduring respect he commanded across generations.
In remembering Hanshi Dr. S. Rethinam, we are reminded that greatness lies not in titles alone, but in the values imparted and the character shaped in others. His legacy lives on — in disciplined minds, in grateful hearts and in the unbreakable bond between a guru and his disciples.
Though he has departed from this world, his teachings remain alive in every act of integrity inspired by his example.
May his noble soul rest in eternal peace and may his life continue to inspire generations to come.
