LBSIM organized an IT Summit on “Computing for Sustainability: The Green IT”


Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi, organized an IT Summit on “Computing for Sustainability: The Green IT” on 27th October, 2012.

The Chief Guest for the occasion, Prof. Nupur Prakash, Principal, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, GGSIPU, New Delhi along with Shri Adarsh Shastri, Business Head, Apple India Pvt. Ltd., Dr. G.L. Sharma, Summit Chairperson, LBSIM and Prof. Rekha Gupta, IT Summit Convener, LBSIM, Mr. Nitish Sharma, President, IT Grid, LBSIM inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp and paying floral tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji. 

In his welcome address, Dr. G.L. Sharma, talked about the consumption of electricity by the new age equipment and the growing concern of disposal of these materials i.e. waste management.

Prof. Nupur Prakash, in her inaugural address, emphasized on lesser consumption of power and gave students the food for thought to implement Green IT through their projects and assignments. She advocated the use of light weight algorithms and Cloud computing architectures henceforth reducing the IT budget and consumption of electricity.

Shri Adarsh Shastri, mentioned pervasiveness of IT and the efficient use of electricity and synergy of environment and technology equally in a manner which is fruitful for human race as well as nature. He also discussed extensively on the importance of responsible disposal of E-waste.

Mr. Anmol Anand , Alumnus was appreciated by LBSIM and awarded the certificate of appreciation by Prof. Nupur Prakash for developing android application PocketSMS for deaf and blind people. 

The first technical session on The Green IT- Technical Perspective was chaired by Mr. Sushil Dania, Technical Manager & Head- Noida Operations, GalaxE.Solutions, who emphasized refurbishing of the existing hardware. He also mentioned that IT industry is moving towards being a service as well as the futuristic green industry . Speakers for this session included Mr. Manav Singal, Group Project Manager-Communication, Energy & Utilities, Infosys Ltd., Chandigarh, Mr. Nipun Kohli, Smarter Commerce Offering Leader, IBM India Ltd and Mr. Sandeep Asnani, Pursuit Lead, Fujitsu Consulting India Pvt. Ltd. The session was highly interactive with equal participation from the audience. The key issues discussed in the session were reduction of complexity and resources to increase the efficiency of computing for sustainability. Speakers briefed the audience about the practices implemented in their respective organizations to encourage efficient use of resources, hardware disposal cycle and optimizing data center; henceforth encouraging Green IT. They also discussed about the challenges faced by IT industry to implement green IT and suggested looking beyond programming skills to adapt and update themselves. 

The second session on “Greening” the Workforce: HR Perspective was chaired by Mr. Akshay Bhargava, Head- PMO, Government Industry Solution Unit, TCS who said that HR and IT are the support functions for an organization and not an industry in itself. Other prominent speakers included Ms. Vasudha Kapoor, Project Staffing Professional, IBM India Ltd., Mr. Shubhankar Dhar, Manager- Business Operation & Planning – APAC, Avaya India. The speakers updated the audience on changing technology that includes rapid consumerization of devices, mobile collaboration and virtualization and ongoing changing scenario.
