In this special feature, Prof. S.S. Dogra engages in a candid conversation with this remarkable changemaker.
Q1: Your cameo in Bollywood’s Don 2 is quite fascinating. How did that happen?
Manimaran:
It’s a lifetime memory. I attended just one audition, not knowing I’d end up sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan. I was the only Malaysian Indian cast in the movie, directed by Farhan Akhtar. The shoot took place in Melaka, and we even stayed in the same hotel.
There’s a scene where Shah Rukh Khan and Boman Irani had to carry me on a stretcher—it was past midnight, and we did over 12 takes. What struck me most was SRK’s professionalism. No complaints. Just pure focus. I even taught him some Malay words! It was an unforgettable five-day shoot and a proud moment for Malaysia.
Q2: Are you collaborating with the Indian or Nepali film industries currently?
Manimaran:
Yes, I’m in early talks to remake a short film I directed in Malaysia. It’s a suspense thriller centered on the critical issue of child abuse. I believe storytelling must have social purpose.
I’m actively seeking collaborations with the Nepali film industry to take this project forward. The message is global, and so must be the platform.
Q3: What are your current areas of work and future aspirations?
Manimaran:
I’m working on a Nepal–Malaysia Tourism Exchange Program, especially with Negeri Sembilan state. It’s a place that reflects the heart of multicultural Malaysia.
I’m also exploring entertainment projects, including short films and cultural exchange programs. One of my dream initiatives is to construct a Lord Karthikeyan (Murugan) Temple in Kathmandu. The land has been identified, and planning is in progress. I see it as both a spiritual beacon and a cultural landmark. I thank my Nepal partner Mr. Sudharshan Thapa, Nava Sunthakan Academy for the continuously assistance and advise on all my planning and ventures in Nepal.
Through my enterprise, PRONES Resources, I also consult on international ventures—from Nepal’s hydro projects to Indonesia’s airport development and collaborations with Turkish partners.
