STREET PLAYS ,ONE-ACT PLAY COMPETITION ,STAGE PRESENTATION AND MULTI –LINGUAL CULTURE TO MARK FIVE DAY FESTIVITIES


The five day pan India, multi- lingual theatre fest under the auspices of Shakespeare Sabha, the multi-lingual dramatics society of St. Stephen’s College opened here today with National awardee Sachin Gupta’s guest appearance play ‘ Wake up call’ and talk on ‘Traditions of Indian Theatre’ by Jayant Kastuar, Ex-secretary, Sangeet Natak Academy.

The five day festivities during Dastaan 2015 will witness Street play performance by Srishti, an NGO, Anhad, a street play competition, guest theatre performance by Asmita Theatre Group and multilingual one-act play competition.

The major highlight of the opening ceremony was famous award winning film and theatre director Sachin Gupta’s hindi play ‘ Wake up call’ . The plot of the revolved around the occurrence of a bomb blast in Mumbai. The play looks at the effects of violence on people, a community’s varied responses towards tragedy and examines the insensitivity of those with might and power. The play dwelt on socially relevant issues thus creating an awareness among the people.

The play effectively portrayed the effects of violence on the lives of the common man. At the same time, it sarcastically commented on the insensitivity and inactiveness of the people with money and power. More than entertaining, the play was aimed at educating and awakening people on social and environmental related issues.

Sachin Gupta, Director, Recipient of National Award “Natya Bhushan” ,Sachin Gupta is the founder and Director of Chilsag Chillies Theatre Company which has produced Thirteen Original theatre productions written and directed by Sachin Gupta addressing various sensitive and important social issues. He has trained more than 400 actors in various Acting programs under the Acting School he began in 2004.In 2005 he moved to North America to expand his Film & Theatre work , staged three successful Off Broadway Shows with American actors & studied Acting at prestigious Lee Strasberg Film Institute,New York & at Fanshawe College, Canada and has learned nuances of Shakespearean acting at the prestigious Emerson College in US.

The cast in the play included budding Cine actress Bhavita Anand, who is also working in Sachin Gupta’s coming movie ‘Thoda Lutf,Thoda Ishq’ ,Deepali jain , Mr H.C.Suri ,who is also registrar of the Delhi High Court,Tarun Dev, Nitin,andeep, vidushi, Abhishek and Avinash. St Stephen’s Principal Dr Valson Thampu was also present on the occasion.
