The Floods of Jammu & Kashmir !

R.D. Bhardwaj “Noorpuri”

The current spate of floods have not only caused a lot of deaths and destruction and bringing a series of problems not only for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, but also for the government and rescuerers. The floods or any such natural calamity like earth quake or tsunami etc. are the outburst of nature or wrath of nature which causes a lot of deaths and destruction all around, and that pushes the damaged area and its people backwards by many years. The sufferings of the people multiply as the days pass by and the people realise as to what they have lost in the floods. This situation has reminded me a poem : “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” written by an English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, where the poet narrates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The sailor describes the problems faced by him and his team members on sea as, no doubt they had water and water everywhere on sea, but it could not be drunk it because the sea water is saline. The poet says :-

“Day after day, day after day / We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship / Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, every where / And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where / Nor any drop to drink………..”

The people of Jammu and Kashmir are also now facing a similar problem of hugely excess of water spread everywhere, their houses have been damaged, most of the belongings have either been lost or damaged and the irony of fate is that – they can neither make use of that water to drink nor cook their foods with the help of that plenty of water, which has been brought to them by the annoyed nature. And old saying – the excess of everything is bad, has again proved its value and worth.

Secondly, as so many news channels are showing in their various reports these days, where are many other so called friends of people of J&K these days? The leaders like Sayed Geelani, Yasin Malik, Mufti Mohd. Sayed and his daughter, their Pakistani supporters, ISI and many other so called supporters and well-wishers of people of the valley. Why did these political parties not deploy their workers to help the people trapped in the fury of floods? Even people are seen crying on TV that they are nowhere to be seen since the outrage of the devastating floods. If anyone has come out openly for them, it is the Govt. of India and Indian Army who has extended a huge helping hand to them in this hour of their needs, extending both physical help and providing financial package for them. Even people are seen mouthing bad words for the state government, as they had ignored warnings from meteorological department and did practically nothing to evacuate the low lying areas and shifting the people to some safer places.

The people of the valley should always remember that the outsiders are just outsiders, and they are actually foes of our country and also of the people of Kashmir, and as such, they should not fall into their trap and indulge in anti social and anti-national activities at all. Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and only Govt. of India / Indian Army will share their woes and sufferings and extend a helping hand to them. People from across the border only are interested in provoking them to grinding their own axe, shedding bloods of roads and snatching sons of the soil through their divisive and terrorist activities, as their ulterior motive is to bleed India and not help our people of the valley in any manner. The sooner people realise this hard fact, the better it would be for them and also for the country as a whole.
