Urivi Vikram Charitable Trust has celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day

Urivi Vikram Charitable Trust has celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day on 23rd November, 2013 at UVNAC Building, Sector 22, Dwarka. Shri Bhim Sain Bassi, IPS, the Commissioner of Police, GNCT of Delhi has been the Chief Guest , who kindly interacted with the beneficiaries and other respectables of Dwarka. It is a Trust founded by former Delhi Police Officer, Dr U N B RAO, and his wife in memory of their only son aged 21 yrs, who died in 1990 in a road accident.

Mr Bassi related extremely well with the UVCT beneficiaries who are mostly drawn from marginalized families. He assured that success is not too far and that they could accomplish by moving step by step and with determination. Some of the beneficiaries from Tagore Garden Centre felt exalted when they were told by the Chief Guest that he too was from their neighborhood . It has been a wonderful and memorable experience to those down-troden,but aspiring young adults.

Urivi Vikram Charitable Trust is a National-level NGO which has been striving for the last 22 years for the empowerment and betterment of adolescents (aged 10 to 19yrs.) and women issues. In fact, UVCT highlighted the issue of adolescents and systematically worked to bring-forth a national policy for adolescents. It held two National Meets (1999 and 2005) and ultimately established the first-ever National Centre for Adolescents.

Urivi Vikram Charitable Trust is functioning in Delhi through its five centers (Tagore Garden, Bindapur, Wazirpur, Narela, and Kapashera) and in 4 other States namely Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, besides one in USA. The Gender Resource Center (Stree Shakti Suvidha Kendra) in Kapasera of Mission Convergence of GNCTof Delhi; and two Targeted Intervention Centers (for promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and Prevention) of DSACS in Industrial Areas of Wazirpura and Narela, are government funded-projects.

In a bid to encourage Civic departments located in Dwarka Sub-city, UVCT instituted a Rolling Trophy for a Government Department which has been extending best possible services in Dwarka. The Governing Body of UVCT and other relevant stake holders of Dwarka have decided to award this Trophy, for the year 2014, to the Civil Department of DDA, which has developed new water resources (potable water) by digging 16 bore-wells and obtaining additional supplies from DJB (totaling to two million gallons per day), and thereby partly resolved the acute shortage of water in Dwarka. The Trophy was awarded by Shri Bassi to Shri D P Singh, Chief Engineer, Dwarka.

It may be recalled that Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, former President of India; Dr. Shiv Raj Patil, Governor of Punjab; Dr Karan Singhji; Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi; Lt. Gov. Tejender Khanna and other eminent personalities from India and abroad had already visited the Trust at various occasions.

While UVCT focuses on the social and economic empowerment of young adults aged 13-21 years – both male and females – our clientele largely comprises women. UVCT started talking of India’s ‘demographic dividend’ since its inception in 1993 and constantly endeavored to find ways and means to transform the country’s ‘Burden of Population’ into an ‘Asset of Human Resources’, through a process of empowerment, rather than of control. It started with Psychological Counseling and Career Guidance to students (Project Prerana); Mainstreaming school-drop outs and under-achievers through Life Skill Education (Project Shakti) ; Vocational skill training (Project Sahara); Rehabilitation and reformation of juvenile delinquents (Project Parivarthan) and the like. The National Centre conducts a variety of adolescent-centric programs/seminars and orients teachers/parents as well.
