It was a red letter day for N.K.Bagrodia Public School, Dwarka when it co-hosted with six more prestigious schools of Dwarka and West Delhi the Inter School Sankalp Sahodaya South West Zone Model United Nations 2015. Student delegates at NKBPS,Dwarka which represented schools of South West and Central Delhi delilberated on various burning issues effecting the world. In this era of globalization, being globally aware is more important than ever. MUN which accelerates learning is an exercise in research, public speaking, teamwork and provides the student delegates to realistically understand the world and its people by researching its issues.
The closing ceremony of this mega event of the two-day Model United Nations was graced by Ms Kiran Mehra Kerpelman, Director, United Nation Information centre Of India & Bhutan on 28th August 2015 and Mr Dhirendra Bhatnagar, Secretary General of Confederation of UNESCO clubs & Association of India was the Chief Guest on 27th August 2015 when the school hosted this event. The General Secretary, Manika Rawat, delivered the welcome address and declared the conference open. The session simulated three committees, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Human Rights Council (HRC), and Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC). The agendas were related to some of the common vices that plague the modern world Review of Disaster Preparedness, Protection & Assistance to Displaced Persons for General Assembly, Protecting the Rights of Migrant Workers for Human Rights Council and Fostering Sustainable Development Practices through Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This MUN was unique as it covered all the 193 nations of the United Nations and … schools of Delhi and NCR participated in this event. The closing ceremony was graced by the principals of the seven co host schools of Sankalp Sahodaya. The welcome address was delivered by the Chairperson of Sankalp Sahodaya Ms Sheelu Mathews, Principal of St Mary’s School. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the UN General Assembly, students of the school presented a T-Shirt with the UN logo painted by them to Ms Kiran Mehra Kerpelman.
An enriching video conference was organized on women’s safety and position in the society ensued between the Director, United Nation Information centre of India & Bhutan, Ms Kiran Mehra Kerpelman and Mr Slawek, an educator from Poland which was appreciated by all.
The interaction was followed by the UN song and the yoga display by the students of all the seven co host of Sankalp Sahodaya. The chief guest then gave away the trophies to all the Best Delegates of General Assembly of the seven co host of Sankalp Sahodaya Model United Nations 2015. The Principal of the school Dr (Mrs) Rajee N Kumar then handed over the draft resolution to Ms Kiran Mehra Kerpelman.
In her address to the delegates and students, Ms Kiran Mehra Kerpelman quoted “I am so pleased that a school which has no experience of MUN less than a year ago has delivered such a wonderful result – together with participation from 70 other schools.” She further complimented the students to keep up the good work and to the teachers to make students global citizens. She told to organise such events to help the youth learn about the functioning of the United Nation.
The event definitely helped the delegates to gain an insight into the functioning of the United Nations and the dynamics of International relations. Students from class IX-XI assumed the roles of UN representatives and members of other international bodies and national cabinets. It was a unique opportunity for the students to debate on issues that confront world leaders and to draft resolutions in response to these global issues. Participants representing different countries developed their abilities to work with others who are equally motivated and are passionate about global concerns.
