Every year, at this time of the year, Mumbai witnesses thunderous outpouring of heavenly skies. However, come this monsoon and Mumbai will also witness outpourings of a different kind – visual treats, from the very heart of a renowned artist.

Harmony and rhythms is the theme of her oils, acclaimed artist Sandhya Singh is set to display in Mumbai, starting 29 June 2011.
Panch Tatva & Shanta Sangeet – Serenity
Her art got its inspiration from the serenity in nature on one hand, and the captivating power of music on the other. As years passed by, all time greats, like Ustaad Bismillah Khan, Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Pt Ravi Shankar and others, only helped her art take a distinct form with unique grammar and syntax – capturing the harmony and rhythms of music on canvas.
In her works, the rhythms of music take circular, wavy forms. It starts with a central theme, gradually moving away from that centre by way of elaborating and expanding it, coming back to just going away again, elaborating and expanding it slightly differently this time. Her characteristic soft, gradual merging of textures is the harmony one experiences in music, and the colours and hues are the notes and the timing.

In a career spanning nearly forty years, Sandhya Singh has displayed her works, and won spontaneous accolades from one and all, at number of national and international centres, including Delhi, Lucknow, Bombay, Kolkata, Dehradun, Jamnagar,  San Diego, Houston,  Cairo and Dhaka. One of her show is to open at Colombo, Sri Lanka, on the coming 12 July.

She has number of famous and discerning art lovers amongst admirers of her works – Padmshree Mr. Ram Sutar, outstanding sculptor and President, All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS) and Padmshree Mr. Keshav Malik, a sensitive poet and renowned art critic, amongst them.
Sandhya’s journey of art with her “rhythms”, initially discovered in Music, has extended to other forms – like dance, and indeed, is continuing into life, nature and even emotions. In her journey of rhythms and harmony on canvas, Sandhya Singh has regaled and captivated her viewers, like a maestro, overcoming the constraints of visual art form – two dimensions of canvas and limited sensory stimuli (as compared to, say the music itself, offering rich holistic immersive experience to the audience) most successfully.
The show, to be opened at Mumbai on 29th June, brings a rich sampling of her recent works on rhythms and harmony. Her works stand out for their forms, colours, compositions and style. Great music composer, Ludwig van Beethoven once said “Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life”. Sandhya Singh, a renowned painter, just does that – translating the sensation of musical rhythm found in nature all around us on her canvas. The inner experience triggered by the melodious rhythms in Sandhya’s works underlines the universality of human emotions – of joy and peace.
On her show in Mumbai, Sandhya Singh says, “My show in Mumbai is like home coming. I spent several memorable years in the metropolis. At least some of those memories of those days have been imbibed in my works – the unique flaours of Mumbai – the serene music, of evening breeze whistling past the tree lines, of rhythmic waves washing ashore, and more importantly, the spirit of Mumbaikars, the never say die, positive attitude.”
The painting exhibitions of Sandhya’s recent works remains opens at DD Neroy Gallery from 29 June till the 06 Jul.
