[By Vegentie Makka Achambit]
As Prof. S.S. Dogra celebrates his birthday today, the moment becomes far more than a personal milestone. It serves as an occasion for the world to reflect upon the remarkable journey of a man who has shaped journalism, enriched literature, empowered youth and strengthened cross-cultural dialogue across South Asia and beyond. Born on December 1, 1966, in Delhi, with proud roots in Himachal Pradesh—and fond of cricket, reading, films, singing, travelling, writing and building friendships from an early age—Prof. Dogra today stands among the most respected voices in media and education.
A Scholar With Global Foundations
Prof. Dogra’s academic achievements span both national and international landscapes. He holds a Bachelor in Education, a Master’s degree in Journalism, specialised training in TV Journalism from R.T. Academy in Moscow (Russia), and professional Film Studies from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. This rare blend of global and Indian academic exposure has been a cornerstone of his 30-year influence in the world of media.
The Voice of Credible Journalism
With over three decades of active journalism behind him, Prof. Dogra has emerged as a steadfast advocate of ethical and responsible reporting. As the Bureau Chief (Delhi) of Himalini Magazine, Nepal, and an esteemed member of the Correspondents Club of South Asia, his articles and editorials are known for balance, clarity and social responsibility. His work continues to uphold journalism as a beacon of truth and public service.
Author of Transformative Literature
Prof. Dogra’s literary works have touched and inspired readers across generations.
His best-selling book “Media Can Do Wonders in Students’ Life” (2017), published by Maple Publishing House, received international acclaim and was recommended to three leading Indian universities by the Hon’ble President of India. The book remains a powerful guide helping students use media as a tool for creativity, learning and personal growth.
His fourth book, “Rendezvous – In & Off the Fields,” is a landmark contribution to journalism education. Through 75 interviews conducted over 28 years with eminent personalities, the book functions both as a repository of wisdom and a practical manual for mastering the art of interviewing. Each conversation illuminates journalistic technique, ethics and the deeper purpose of dialogue.
Prof. Dogra’s literary journey has now crossed linguistic boundaries. His sixth book, “Udachi Vam,” written in Russian, was launched at the Press Club of India—symbolising a meaningful step in Indo-Russian literary collaboration. With several new works nearing publication, he continues to expand his creative canvas through motivational writing and poetry.
A Filmmaker With a Social Vision
Beyond the written word, Prof. Dogra uses cinema as a tool for social reflection. His documentaries and short films, featured on YouTube and IMDb, demonstrate a filmmaker dedicated to culture, community and human values. His visual storytelling, grounded in purpose, resonates with audiences across cultures.
A Pioneer of the Library Movement
One of his most impactful initiatives is the democratization of knowledge. Prof. Dogra has established four libraries in Delhi, founded a Global Library in Nepal, and recently transformed a remote village library in Kanda, Uttarakhand, into an international learning hub. His quiet yet powerful library movement continues to bring books, awareness and opportunity to rural and underserved communities.
